'STUMP' - Teaser
STUMP / CANON
'A short film focusing on the dysfunctional relationship between two brothers. To the outside world, one seems to be the very definition of success – handsome, fit and disciplined, while the other is overweight, slobby and wheelchair bound. But appearances, as well as relationships, can be deceiving.'
From an early stage we felt it important to musically portray the complex interwoven relationship between the two brothers. We created movement between minor and major chords to express the dichotomy.
Using cello and synth we mirrored the emotional interplay between the brothers, and their internal and external conflict. We then followed the storyline's development, as the initial appearance of their roles unfolded and flipped to reveal a slightly more sinister undertone.
Keeping the cello as lead, we wanted to create a score that still felt contemporary, we used delays to create rhythmic movements, underpinned with subtle synth arpeggiators, drones and atmospherics.

‘The story is about two very different brothers and the filmmakers enlisted very different techniques to illustrate these two characters.’ “The film portrays an obvious disability and a hidden disability,” he continues. “We were filming for intimacy and naturalism and definitely got both of those things thanks to the cameras, Laura Bellingham's (DOP) eye and references, as well as Director Tommy Boulding’s ability to prep the storyboard and the sequences were just as important.
